As a Soil Microbiologist and Biochemist for the Wind Erosion & Water Conservation Research Unit,
my research projects are focused to obtain a better understanding of the role of soil microorganisms and
their processes in soil functioning and the crop production of semi-arid climates with variable water sources
and amounts. Semi-arid environments should be studied at least as extensively as humid environments because soils
in these climates have very low organic matter content but are economically important in the world food supply.
To maximize the crop production we must understand the impact of the agricultural management practices on soil microbial
and biochemical properties. The study of soil microorganisms is important because they play a key role in many soil processes and necessary because the soil microbiological and biochemical parameters can indicate
early trends on the changes of other soil properties that would take longer to be detected. |
